Let’s face it, staying anywhere in Mallorca is excellent. With its many miles of stunning roads, fantastic climbs and brilliant scenery plus 308 days of sun each year; courteous local drivers; a low volume of traffic and excellent support services and it is no wonder that our island is a cycling paradise.
Now, where to stay? It would be tough to go wrong and not get the best out of your time here, but some people do.
The criteria we have used to decide on the best place to stay are the following:
We ran the above criteria against the following popular towns : Alcúdia / Port d'Alcúdia, Andratx, Can Pastilla, Déia, Fornalutx, Palma, Peguera, Playa de Muro, Port de Pollença, Port de Sóller, Santa Ponsa, Selva, Sóller and Valldemossa. They all ranked quite highly but there was a clear winner.
The overall and undisputed winner and the best place to stay in Mallorca for a cycling holiday is Port de Pollença.
The runners up are Port de Sóller and Port d'Alcúdia.
We have had direct experience of the following Port de Pollença businesses and have no hesitation in recommending them and feel comfortable that you will get the same excellent service that we have always received:
Aparthotel Duva & Spa, Hoposa Villa Concha, Hoposa Illa d’Or and Hoposa Daina, Fergus Pollensa Park & Spa, PortBlue Club Pollentia, and the Hotel Sis Pins for when everything else is closed between November and February.
Most people choose bed and breakfast as the above hotels all do very good breakfasts. But, these are the restaurants that you need to try, Tolo’s Restaurant, Stay Restaurant, Sea.Bar.Is and the Bellaverde Restaurant (vegan).
The Port is blessed with a number of excellent bike rental outlets and these are the ones that we have had excellent service from: Pollensa Cycling, 2GoCycling, Niu Wave Bicicletes (free delivery to Port Pollenca), Bikehead, Max Huerzler, and Mallorca Bike Hire.
Private Airport Transfers with Mallorca Cycle Shuttle and Condé Transfers. Efficient and reasonably priced to get your trip off to the best possible start and end. 24/7/365. They do that old fashioned thing where they check the flight timings and make sure you are collected and dropped off at the correct time. Take care, not every service does.
Bus Out Bike Back
Take one of the 400+ scheduled buses to the start of the bucket list Mallorca cycle routes with Mallorca Cycle Shuttle. Every month apart from August.
Mallorca Bicycle Rescue
We have to recommend ourselves! Take out one of our rescue policies for when bike or body break down. Island wide, 365 days per year.
We started Mallorca Bicycle Rescue because if you break down anywhere it is tough to get a lift back to where you are staying and the last thing we wanted was for a cyclist to remember their whole trip for the one time their bike or body broke down and they spent ages on the roadside in the middle of nowhere.
To be aware of:
The resort is mostly closed between November and February but there is still enough open to make it worth your while coming for those completely empty roads..
Yes, it does get busy in Port de Pollença from mid-April to mid-May but you can still easily get away from the crowds without trying too hard. Just set off by 8 a.m. or head for the little used but brilliant cami rurals (lanes) in the centre of the island.
Port de Sa Calobra - an adventurous choice.
An honourable mention goes to Port de Sa Calobra. There are a few very nice villas at the bottom of the hill and some people are choosing to base themselves here for a couple of days. It is an adventure and you know what? You have to ride the best climb on the island to get to anywhere else! The local restaurants close early, around 7 p.m. and any groceries have to be carried in - some people shop in Port de Sóller and then take the ferry round.
Wherever you choose to stay in cycling paradise we are sure that you will have a great time on our smooth roads and be back regularly. See you soon.
